Museum of Earthquake

The Sakarya Earthquake Museum is housed in a building whose damaged exterior facade immediately catches attention as visitors approach. Inside, the exhibits contain photographs, artifacts, and information showing how seismic events have affected communities across Turkey.

The museum opened in 2006 to document the 1999 seismic event that struck the region and caused significant loss of life. The collection preserves this memory and shows how understanding of earthquake hazards changed building codes and construction practices in Turkey.

A memorial wall displays the names of those lost in seismic events, and photographs show how people moved forward after disasters. The space reflects how the community honors these memories and continues to rebuild.

The building is easily accessible on foot in the city center, and signage guides visitors through the exhibition areas. A simulator allows visitors to experience controlled seismic movements and learn about the safety standards used in modern construction.

The building itself is a work of memorial art: its damaged facade was deliberately designed to show the destructive power of earthquakes. Through this architectural choice, the lesson becomes visible and tangible as soon as visitors arrive.
