Kuzuyayla Nature Park is a protected green area on the slopes of Kartepe, near the city of Kocaeli. Its forest paths lead past tall beech and dogwood trees, with open spots where visitors can look out over Sapanca Lake and the Izmit Gulf in a single view.
The area was declared a nature park in 2011, giving legal protection to its forest and wildlife. Before that, the high ground above Sapanca Lake was mainly used by local herders and loggers, with little formal infrastructure.
Kuzuyayla functions as a shared outdoor garden for families from Kocaeli and nearby towns, who gather here for weekend lunches under the trees. The provision of a mosque next to picnic tables and a countryside restaurant shows how the space blends daily habits with time spent outdoors.
Wear sturdy shoes, since the ground can be uneven under the trees and after rain. Morning visits are often quieter, and the paved access from Kartepe makes the park easy to reach by car.
On clear days, the viewing points here let you see both a freshwater lake and a sea inlet at the same time, which is unusual for a single inland stop. The park also shelters reptiles covered by the Bern Convention, a quiet detail most visitors never notice while walking the trails.
