Sarıyar Dam, Gravity dam in Ankara Province, Turkey
Sarıyar Dam is a concrete gravity dam built across the Sakarya River in Ankara Province, Turkey. The structure holds back a large reservoir and powers a hydroelectric plant on its downstream side.
The dam was built in the 1950s as part of Turkey's early push to develop national energy infrastructure. It was one of the first large hydroelectric projects in the country, opening the way for further development along the Sakarya River.
The power plant attached to the dam bears the name of Hasan Polatkan, a Turkish finance minister who died in a plane crash. His name is clearly visible at the site, giving the place a human dimension that goes beyond its technical function.
The area around the dam is best reached by private vehicle, as roads through the rural parts of Ankara Province can be limited in public transport. The best views of the wall and the reservoir are from the elevated points along the access roads.
The reservoir behind the dam plays a key role in managing floods along the Sakarya River, protecting communities and farmland far downstream. This flood control function is not immediately visible to visitors but is at least as important as electricity generation.
