Notion, Archaeological site in Menderes, Turkey
Notion was an ancient city that spread across two hills near the Mediterranean coast, surrounded by fortification walls. The settlement contained two marketplaces, a theater, and multiple religious structures connected by ancient pathways.
The city was established as a port for Colophon in the 7th century BCE and later gained independence. It became part of the Roman province of Asia in 133 BCE.
The Temple of Athena Polias dominates the western hill with its Corinthian columns and ceremonial altar. This religious structure reflects how worship shaped the daily life of the community that lived here.
Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is hilly with uneven ancient pathways. Plan to arrive early and allow enough time to explore both hills thoroughly.
Researchers from Michigan and Brown Universities began new excavations here in 2014. Their work focuses on understanding why this ancient urban settlement lasted only briefly.
