Artvin Province

Artvin Province, Province in northeastern Turkey

Artvin is a province in northeastern Turkey with mountainous terrain, dense forests, and steep valleys stretching between the Black Sea coast and the Georgian border. The land rises in layers across hillsides and river valleys where scattered towns and villages nestle among the slopes.

The region passed between Ottoman and Russian control several times during the 1800s before its borders were finally set by the Treaty of Kars in 1921. This border agreement shaped the area as it exists today within modern Turkey.

Several ethnic groups live here, including Georgians, Laz, and Hemshin people, each speaking their own language and keeping local traditions alive. You notice these differences in the villages and in how people celebrate and live together.

The nine districts are connected by mountain roads that wind through the terrain, while the port city of Hopa provides access to Black Sea routes. The hilly landscape means travel takes time, but the roads link even small villages to major areas.

Each June the Kafkasör plateau becomes an arena for traditional bull wrestling where animals compete in ritual matches. Spectators come from across the region to watch this event that runs deep in local culture.
