Cehennem Deresi Canyon, Canyon and nature park in Artvin Province, Turkey.
Cehennem Deresi is a deep canyon in Artvin Province with vertical rock walls reaching 200 meters high and extending roughly 2.5 kilometers in length. The formation creates a long, narrow chasm shaped by sheer drops on both sides.
The canyon was carved over geological time by continuous erosion from powerful rivers and streams flowing down from the North-Eastern Plateau. This natural force slowly cut through the rock and sculpted the landscape over thousands of years.
The name Cehennem Deresi means Hell's Creek, a reference that comes from how locals perceived the dramatic depth and sheer rock faces. Standing at the rim, you immediately understand why the area earned this stark title.
The best access is through Trabzon or Erzurum airports, followed by bus transportation to Artvin and then a short drive to reach the site. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for variable weather in this mountain region.
A new glass-floor project is being constructed to create a dramatic viewpoint above the chasm, designed to span between both sides. This structure will allow visitors to walk directly over the void and experience the depth firsthand.
