Machakhela National Park, National park in Adjara, Georgia
Machakhela National Park covers 8733 hectares of land in the Machakhlistskali valley with dense forests of chestnut, beech, hornbeam, and alder trees. The park sits in Adjara region and protects a significant portion of the Colchian forest ecosystem.
The park was established in 2012 as a protected area to preserve the Colchian forest ecosystem and its rare plant species. This designation marked an important effort to safeguard the region's natural diversity for the future.
Stone bridges, ancient fortresses, and traditional wine presses are scattered throughout the area, showing how people have lived and worked in this valley for centuries. These structures blend naturally with the forest surroundings and reflect local traditions.
Three main roads connect to walking trails throughout the park, allowing you to explore different areas. The visitor center in Acharisagmarti village provides information and the permits you need before heading out.
From Mtavarangelozi mountain within the park, you can see five different villages across the Turkish border and watch where the Chorokhi River meets the Black Sea. This elevated viewpoint reveals a rare cross-border perspective that few visitors experience.
