Batumi Archaeological Museum

The Batumi Archaeological Museum is housed in a mid-20th century building in this coastal city and displays thousands of artifacts from ancient times. The exhibition halls contain pottery, terracotta figures, and metal objects discovered across the region, spanning multiple civilizations.

The museum preserves tools discovered in the surrounding mountains dating back around 300,000 to 400,000 years, showing humans lived here in prehistoric times. Later, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine influences shaped this region as a trading hub.

The collection displays pottery and metal objects from different ancient periods, revealing how this region connected with other Mediterranean cultures through trade and exchange. These items tell the story of people who lived and worked here.

The museum is open daily and visitors should plan for at least 2 hours to explore the various exhibition areas properly. The location is easily accessible in the city center, though some sections feature steep stairs.

The museum displays a remarkable collection of ancient goldwork that confirms the ancient region of Colchis was indeed wealthy in gold, matching descriptions from old writers. These pieces link historical accounts with archaeological evidence.
