Kemer, Mediterranean resort town in Antalya Province, Turkey.
Kemer is a small town on the Turkish Mediterranean coast in Antalya Province, sitting between mountains and the sea. The marina accommodates more than 300 boats, and hotels and beach sections line up along the coastline.
In ancient times the place was called Idyros and remained a small village for centuries. The current name dates from 1916, when stone walls were built to protect against flash floods from the mountains.
Turkish residents in the area arrived largely from Greece after the population exchange of the 1920s and brought their traditions with them. Today the region focuses heavily on international visitors, with restaurants and shops adapted to different European languages.
The bus station in town connects the place daily with larger cities across Turkey. Many archaeological sites and natural areas lie within short driving distances along the coast.
In the mountains above town natural gas flames have burned for thousands of years, called Chimera and clearly visible at night. This fire forms from gas escaping the ground and igniting in contact with air.
