Aydos Castle

Aydos Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Sultanbeyli, Turkey.

Aydos Castle consists of ruins from a medieval fortification positioned on a hilltop with a double wall system protecting the summit. The structure still displays its oval shape, with defensive walls encircling the elevated terrain and concentrated defensive features on its western side.

The fortress was built by Byzantine forces in the late 1100s as a defense against Turkish expansion following the Battle of Manzikert. It later fell to Ottoman forces under Abdurrahman Gazi, marking a turning point in regional control.

The castle was once a vital stronghold connecting the Byzantine world with the advancing Ottoman forces in the region. Local stories passed down through generations speak of the fortress and its role in shaping the area's identity.

The site sits on a hilltop and is best visited during dry weather, with sturdy footwear recommended for the uneven ground. It is advisable to check access conditions in advance, as there are restrictions in place and security measures protect the structures.

Local tradition tells of a Byzantine lord's daughter who reportedly helped Ottoman forces capture the fortress during its conquest. This tale connects the ruins with the human stories that unfolded at this location.
