Burgazada

Burgazada is a small island in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul with a central hill called Bayraktepe rising about 170 meters high. The entire landmass covers roughly 1.5 square kilometers and features two main religious structures.

The island was originally called Antigoni, named after Antigonus I Monophthalmus, and grew from a Greek settlement into a mixed community. Jewish residents arrived in the 1950s and became part of the island's population.

The Church of Iohannes Prodromos and the Monastery of Hagios Georgios Garipi shape how the island looks and feels. These buildings show how Christianity has been central to life here.

Ferries connect the island regularly to several terminals in Istanbul including Eminönü, Kabataş, Kadıköy, and Bostancı throughout the day. These connections make it easy for visitors to come and go at their own pace.

A former sanatorium established in 1928 as Turkey's first tuberculosis treatment center now operates as a restaurant. This building shows how the island's medical past has been given new purpose today.
