Monument of Liberty, Istanbul

The Monument of Liberty stands on a hill in Şişli and consists of several elements including a mosque-like structure with a triangular base and a cannon-shaped top pointing skyward. The site also contains burial chambers and memorial plaques for various historical figures of that period.

The memorial was built between 1909 and 1911 to commemorate soldiers who died during the March 1909 events. These incidents marked a pivotal turning point in the empire's political history during its transition between governmental systems.

The site honors members of the Young Turk movement whose names are inscribed in the memorial structures. Today visitors can observe how it serves as a place of remembrance for a pivotal political group of the late Ottoman era.

The memorial sits on elevated ground and is reachable through main roads in the district with regular bus connections. The site can be explored on foot and offers views of the surrounding area from its raised position.

The memorial displays the official signature of Sultan Mehmed V on its front surface, marking it as particularly significant from the early modern Ottoman period. It was the first national memorial of its kind erected during the sultan's reign.
