Pangaltı Catholic Cemetery, Catholic cemetery in Feriköy district, Turkey
Pangaltı Catholic Cemetery is a burial ground in the Feriköy district covering six squares with alleys named after saints. The western section features numerous stone monuments and family mausoleums arranged throughout the grounds.
The cemetery was established in 1863 following Sultan Abdülmecid I's decree to support Istanbul's growing urban development. Its creation replaced an earlier burial ground in Pera that gave way to the city's expansion.
The cemetery holds graves of multiple Catholic communities including Levantine, Greek, Armenian, Syrian, Chaldean, and Melkite groups, reflecting Istanbul's religious diversity. These burial sites show the long presence of different Christian traditions in the city.
The cemetery is located roughly three kilometers north of Taksim Square and is fairly easy to reach. Staff can provide access to burial records from the 19th century onward if visitors wish to research family history.
The cemetery's ossuary contains gravestones from earlier burial grounds of the 1850s. These reused stones preserve traces of earlier memorial structures within the site.
