Maçka Gondola, Urban aerial tramway in Şişli district, Turkey.
The Maçka Gondola is an aerial cable car that bridges two city neighborhoods across a valley, connecting the Maçka area with the Taşkışla quarter near Taksim Square. The system spans approximately 334 meters and rises about 42 meters in elevation.
The system was inaugurated in 1993 as a new connection between different city sections, making it easier for people to cross difficult terrain. Since then, it has become an established transport feature of Istanbul.
The cable car links two distinct neighborhoods and provides direct access to busy shopping streets and local gathering spots. Many Istanbul residents use it daily to move between residential areas and the bustling Taksim district.
The journey takes about three and a half minutes, and cars depart regularly throughout the day at short intervals. It is best to ride during less busy times of day for a more relaxed experience.
The structure spans the entire valley without intermediate support towers, creating an unobstructed ride with no visible pillars underneath. This French engineering design was a remarkable technical solution for its time.
