Republic Monument, Bronze and granite monument in Taksim Square, Istanbul, Turkey
The Republic Monument is a bronze sculpture atop a granite step in the center of Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey, reaching a height of 11 meters. The structure consists of several figures on a rectangular pedestal, surrounded by a low platform with steps on all sides.
Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica created this work in 1928 to mark the fifth anniversary of the founding of the republic. The unveiling took place on August 8 of the same year as a reminder of the independence war and the political transformation of the country.
The northern half presents figures in military uniform, while the southern half depicts individuals in civilian dress, symbolizing the foundation of a modern state. Passers-by often see people taking photos around the monument or resting on the surrounding steps.
The square is accessible around the clock and sits directly at the exit of Taksim metro station on the M2 line. Visitors can approach the monument from any direction, as it stands in the open center of the square and remains visible from all sides.
The entire work weighs 84 tons and includes depictions of Soviet generals who provided military support during the independence war. These figures stand on the northern side and represent international relations from that period.
