Taksim Mosque, Mosque in Taksim Square, Istanbul, Turkey
Taksim Mosque is a place of worship on the central square of Beyoğlu in Istanbul, where people gather daily for prayer. The building displays a large dome and a slender tower rising above the neighboring structures.
Construction began in 2017 and finished four years later, after local groups had called for such a place since the early 1950s. The project realized an idea that had been passed down through several generations.
The name of this place of worship refers to the distribution of water in Ottoman times, when a large reservoir once stood in this area. The architecture combines classical dome forms with clean lines and bright facades visible from the surrounding streets.
The prayer area sits on the main floor and offers space for several thousand people at once. Below the building there are additional rooms for events and an underground garage for vehicles.
The building stands at the same height as the surrounding historic churches and reaches about 30 meters (98 feet). The dome was clad with a special metal normally used in aircraft construction.
