Military Museum

The Military Museum displays more than nine thousand objects from Ottoman and Turkish military history across twenty-two exhibition rooms. The collections include weapons, uniforms, equipment, and personal items that document centuries of military life and warfare.

The museum was founded after 1453 in the Church of Saint Irene before moving to its current Harbiye location in 1950. This relocation brought it to the former Ottoman imperial military academy, a significant shift that deepened its connection to military education.

The Mehter Band's daily performances show how the Ottoman military incorporated music into its ceremonies and daily life. These shows offer visitors a window into how soldiers once used tradition to strengthen bonds and mark important moments.

The museum sits near Taksim Square and operates on restricted days throughout the week. Checking the current schedule before your visit helps ensure you don't arrive when the doors are closed.

One of the museum's most treasured objects is the heavy chain that Byzantine defenders used to block the Golden Horn during the 1453 siege. This metal barrier stands as a tangible link to that crucial moment in the city's past.
