Obelisk of Theodosius, Egyptian monument in Sultanahmet Square, Turkey
The red granite obelisk stands 19 meters tall with hieroglyphic inscriptions on each of its four faces displaying military accomplishments of Thutmose III.
Originally erected at the Temple of Karnak around 1450 BC, Emperor Theodosius I transported and raised the obelisk in Constantinople during 390 AD.
The marble pedestal features carvings depicting Emperor Theodosius I presenting victory crowns, along with musicians, dancers, and spectators at the Hippodrome.
The monument remains accessible throughout the year in Sultanahmet Square, with guided tours explaining the Latin and Greek inscriptions on its base.
Bronze cubes beneath the marble base distribute the weight of this 380-ton structure, which required 32 days to erect in its current location.
