Xanthos, Ancient archaeological site in Kaş, Turkey
The Xanthos archaeological complex stretches across hills above the Eşen River, containing stone structures from Lycian, Roman, and Byzantine periods.
In 540 BCE, the population of Xanthos performed a mass suicide and burned their city rather than surrender to the Persian forces of Cyrus.
The archaeological site contains multiple monumental tombs, including the Harpy Tomb with reliefs depicting family scenes from 480-470 BCE.
Visitors can access the site daily through tours departing from Kaş, with guides explaining the historical background of each remaining structure.
The Inscribed Pillar from the 5th century BCE features the longest known Lycian text, documenting King Kerei's battle for independence.
