Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear power plant in Gülnar, Turkey.
Akkuyu is a nuclear facility under construction on the Turkish Mediterranean coast near Gülnar, set between low hills and the open sea. Four Russian-designed reactor units occupy most of the site, which spreads along a flat coastal strip.
Work started in 2018 after Ankara and Moscow signed an intergovernmental agreement eight years earlier. Turkey took its first step into electricity generation by nuclear fission.
The name refers to the nearby coastal village of Akkuyu, where fishermen still moor their boats along the shore and daily life follows the rhythm of the sea. The construction site changes the face of the region as workers from nearby towns and distant provinces stream onto the grounds each day.
The site is closed to the public and can only be viewed from a distance along the coastal road. Visitors passing by will see cranes and building frames rising against the sky.
The project brings together specialists from more than two dozen countries, all working on the four reactor units at once. The construction site is so large that walking from one end to the other takes several minutes.
