Bolkar Mountains, Mountain peaks in Southern Turkey.
The Bolkar Mountains extend across the provinces of Konya, Niğde and Mersin, with Medetsiz Peak reaching 3,524 meters at the highest point. The range displays Mediterranean climate on its southern slopes while continental plateaus characterize the other side.
Between 1825 and 1920, the mountains served as an important mining site for lead ore, supplying the government with substantial quantities of high-quality mineral. The Bulgar-Maden mine was a significant production center during this period.
During summer months, nomadic shepherds move with their herds to the mountain meadows to practice traditional pastoral farming at high elevations. Meeting herders and their animals is part of daily life in the alpine pastures during the warm season.
The best hiking season runs from July through September when snow melts and numerous trails between peaks and alpine lakes become accessible. Visitors should prepare for changing elevations and alpine terrain.
The range is home to 300 plant species found nowhere else in the world, as well as the Toros frog which exists only in Kara Lake. These rare species make the mountains an important place for conservation.
