Afyonkarahisar Archaeological Museum, Archaeological museum in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey
The Afyonkarahisar Archaeological Museum is a collection housed across nine exhibition halls containing about 44,000 objects gathered from the region. The holdings include archaeological finds, ethnographic items, and an extensive ancient coin collection spanning many historical periods.
The museum was founded in 1933 and initially stored its collection in the Gedik Ahmed Pasha Madrasa before moving to its present location in 1971. This relocation allowed the institution to expand and properly organize its growing holdings.
The displays show sculptures, architectural fragments, and daily-life objects created by civilizations spanning from the Copper Age to the Byzantine period. Visitors can see how different peoples in this region lived and what they valued through these everyday pieces.
The museum sits in downtown Afyonkarahisar on Kurtuluş Street at number 96 and opens at 8:30 every day except Monday. Plan your visit for a weekday morning to have enough time to see the halls without feeling rushed.
Below the main exhibition spaces, the building houses specialized storage areas, a photography workshop, and a laboratory dedicated to artifact preservation and research. These facilities work behind the scenes to keep the collection in good condition and uncover new knowledge about the pieces.
