Aizanoi, Archaeological site in Çavdarhisar, Turkey

Aizanoi is an ancient settlement near the Penkalas River with structures built over several historical periods. The site contains a major temple, a combined theater-stadium building, Roman-era public baths, and a circular marketplace that together show how a prosperous city was organized.

The area was first settled during the Bronze Age and grew into a significant center during Hellenistic times. Under Roman rule, this settlement became a major administrative and trading hub for the entire region.

The Temple of Zeus shows how Romans honored their gods through grand stone buildings with columns in two different styles that still stand today. Visitors can see the fine carved details and understand how this structure shaped the spiritual life of the ancient community.

The site is easily reached by bus from the nearby city of Kütahya and is open throughout the year for visitors. Wear comfortable shoes since exploring the ruins involves walking on uneven ground, and bring sun protection as the area is exposed.

A circular marketplace preserves inscriptions of a Roman edict from 301 CE that fixed prices for everyday goods and services across the empire. These rare written records offer visitors an unexpected glimpse into ancient economic control and daily life.
