Rami Barracks, Military barracks in Eyüpsultan, Turkey
Rami Barracks is a historic military installation in Eyüpsultan featuring multiple stone structures arranged around a large rectangular central courtyard. The site contains eight separate wings and several blocks built with heavy stone construction, displaying typical fortress architecture of the 1700s.
The installation was founded in the 1770s under Sultan Mustafa III as a military base and later served a strategic role during the Crimean War. It functioned as a headquarters and training center for generations of soldiers before its modern transformation.
The name Rami refers to a local military figure, and the structure displays Ottoman military design with stone walls arranged around a central open space. Visitors can observe how the layout once organized daily routines and accommodated hundreds of soldiers in separate residential sections.
The site is best explored on foot by walking through the different wings and courtyards at a relaxed pace. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the stone ground can be uneven and there are various steps between different levels.
During the 1918 Allied occupation, French forces placed a cross on the mosque minaret, which sparked secret collaborations between local Turks and Algerian soldiers. This unusual connection between occupiers and residents represents a surprising chapter in the site's past.
