Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center, arts complex in İzmir, Turkey
The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center is a modern cultural facility in Konak with a concert hall seating over 1,000 people and several exhibition spaces. Built on a former tram workshop site, it combines restored historic elements with contemporary design and includes rehearsal rooms, a music library, and a cafe.
The center opened in late 2008 after a design competition and was built on a former tram workshop site. Architect Tevfik Tozkoparan led the project, which was planned in 2000 and completed by a UK-based construction firm three years later.
The center is named after Ahmed Adnan Saygun, a renowned composer from Izmir whose works are regularly performed here. It serves as a gathering place where the local community experiences music, theater, and visual arts across different cultural traditions.
The center is accessible by train from Alsancak or Halkapınar stations, by tram at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun station, and by bus with stops directly outside. The facility is wheelchair accessible and offers special video services for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors.
The building reuses parts of the old tram workshop, preserved and converted into cafes, a music library, and shops. The acoustics were designed with input from experts who also worked on the Sydney Opera House and London's Royal Opera House.
