The Izmir Ethnography Museum is a four-story stone building with marble columns and large arched windows, located in Bahribaba Park in the Konak district. It sits next to the Archaeology Museum and holds a wide collection of objects from everyday life in the region.
The building was constructed in 1917 as a maternity ward, on the site of a former Jewish cemetery. It served as a health authority facility for several decades before opening as a museum in 1984.
The halls showcase traditional Turkish crafts like pottery and carpet weaving through detailed displays that reveal how artisans once worked. These exhibitions help visitors understand the daily practices and skills that shaped local identity.
Admission is free, and informative panels throughout the halls are available in Turkish and English. It is worth going through all four floors, as each one covers a different aspect of regional daily life.
The museum preserves the original interior of Izmir's first Turkish pharmacy, with its shelves and display cases still in place. Next to it, a fully furnished bridal chamber from the 19th century shows what wedding celebrations looked like in wealthy households of the city.
