Kemeraltı

Kemeraltı is an expansive bazaar in Izmir organized as a dense network of narrow alleyways where thousands of shops operate side by side. The vendors sell a wide range of goods including textiles, spices, handmade items, fresh produce, and soaps throughout the interconnected passages.

The bazaar emerged in the 17th century as the city's trading center began to take shape and commercial activity increased. Over subsequent centuries it expanded gradually, becoming more established as a major hub for local and regional commerce.

The bazaar still houses multiple places of worship from different faiths standing side by side, telling the story of a place where different communities once lived and worked together. These buildings serve as visible reminders of the region's multicultural past.

The bazaar covers a large area, so it helps to allow time for exploration and use the multiple entry points accessible from different parts of the city. Visiting in the morning tends to be more comfortable, and wearing comfortable walking shoes is important since you will spend considerable time on your feet.

The bazaar is known for producing traditional Turkish soaps, especially Aleppo soap made from natural oils that has remained popular for generations. Visitors can watch artisans create these soaps using age-old recipes and purchase them directly from the makers.
