Hierapolis, Archaeological site in Pamukkale, Turkey.

Hierapolis is an ancient site in Pamukkale, Denizli Province, Turkey, spreading across a large area that includes a theater, temples, and a vast cemetery. Colonnades line the main street running from the north gate to the Roman baths and branching toward the basilica and nymphaeum.

The city arose in the second century before the common era under the Seleucids as a spa town with thermal springs. It later grew under Roman rule into a prosperous center with wool trade and Christian communities until earthquakes destroyed it repeatedly.

The name comes from Hiera, wife of founder Telephos, and reflects the sacred character of the site. The hot springs drew pilgrims and the sick who bathed in the ancient pool seeking healing.

Access is through the north gate, from where you walk along the main street to reach the theater and baths. In warm weather bring a hat and water as shade is limited across the site.

The burial ground counts over a thousand tombs of different construction styles, including sarcophagi and tumuli. One of the tombs shows in a relief the oldest known image of a mechanical crank and connecting rod used for cutting marble.
