Hierapolis

The ruins of Hierapolis extend over 2 kilometers, featuring a grand theater, extensive necropolis, and monumental gates connected by arcade-lined streets.

Founded in the 2nd century BCE by the Seleucids, Hierapolis developed into a substantial Roman city with thermal springs and wool production facilities.

The city contained temples dedicated to Apollo Lairbenos and housed one of the earliest Christian churches built near Saint Philip's martyrdom location.

Visitors access the archaeological site through the northern gate, which leads to the main street containing the Roman baths and theater complex.

The necropolis contains 1,200 tombs, including the tomb of Marcus Aurelius Ammianos with the earliest known mechanical crank and rod system carving.
