Evliya Kasim Pasha Mosque

Evliya Kasim Pasha Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Edirne, Turkey.

The Evliya Kasim Pasha Mosque is an Ottoman place of worship in Edirne featuring a square floor plan topped by a central dome. The stonework shows rectangular windows set into lower niches and arched openings above, creating a balanced and clearly defined exterior.

The building was constructed between 1478 and 1479 under Kasim Pasha, a regional administrator, during the era of Mehmed the Conqueror and his successor. It stands as an early example of Ottoman architecture from this period of expansion.

The interior shows the typical layout of an Ottoman prayer space, with the central dome creating an open hall for worship that visitors can still experience today. The carved decorations and the sundial on the western wall reveal how practical and spiritual elements were combined in the design.

The mosque sits in the Kirishane quarter on the northern bank of the Tunca River and can be located in this area. Since the building has been inactive since 1950, visitors should check access conditions beforehand and wear appropriate footwear, as the location's flood control measures have affected its condition.

The main entrance displays a three-line inscription in Ottoman script that remains clearly readable today. The arched window niches feature carved five-pointed stars, a common decorative motif from the early Ottoman period.
