Ali Pasha Bazaar, Ottoman bazaar in Edirne, Turkey
Ali Pasha Bazaar is an Ottoman marketplace in Edirne stretching 270 meters long with 130 shops positioned along both sides of a central corridor. The arched ceilings feature windows that allow natural light to fill the covered shopping passage.
The bazaar was built between 1568 and 1569 by Mimar Sinan, a renowned architect working under Sultan Suleyman's rule. Grand Vizier Semiz Ali Pasha commissioned the construction of this major trading structure.
The marketplace is where merchants sell clothing, shoes, and handmade goods to both locals and visitors every day. Shopping here follows traditional ways that have remained part of daily life for generations.
You can enter the bazaar through six different gates that connect to Saraçlar Street, Osmaniye Street, and Talat Pasha Street in central Edirne. The covered design makes it easy to explore in any weather and at any time of day.
The bazaar is known for regional specialties like decorative fruit-shaped soaps and small brooms with attached mirrors that reflect local craftsmanship. These items are hard to find elsewhere and represent a tradition specific to this marketplace.
