Cave of the Seven Sleepers

The Cave of the Seven Sleepers is a natural cavity in limestone formations at the base of a hill near Tarsus, featuring multiple chambers linked by narrow passages. The underground space displays rock formations that developed over countless ages.

This religious site developed during Byzantine times when Christians sought shelter in the 3rd century to escape persecution under Emperor Decius. The cave's connection to this critical period of early Christian history made it an important refuge for believers.

An Ottoman-era mosque built in 1873 stands beside the cave entrance and features a minaret with three distinct balconies. This unexpected blend of natural underground formation and historical religious architecture creates an intriguing contrast on the site.
