Yanshui District is an administrative region in Tainan that covers roughly 52 square kilometers and is home to around 24,000 people. The area sits just a few meters above sea level, giving it a flat landscape characteristic of low-lying coastal regions.
The area was once one of Taiwan's five major trading ports, drawing merchants and fishermen who conducted thriving commerce there. Its importance declined sharply after the harbor closed in the early 1900s.
The Fengpao firecracker festival draws crowds each year when the streets fill with continuous fireworks displays and noise during the Lunar New Year season. The event brings people together in celebration and remains a central part of local identity and seasonal rhythm.
National Highway 1 and Provincial Highway 9 connect this region to other parts of southern Taiwan, making road access straightforward. Visitors can easily arrive by car or pass through, as road connections are well-established.
The name translates to 'salt-water town,' a reflection of its long history as a harbor settlement and center of trade. Despite the harbor's closure, these maritime roots continue to shape the community's identity and collective memory.
