Pingtung Sugar Factory, Industrial heritage site in Pingtung City, Taiwan.
Pingtung Sugar Factory is an industrial heritage site in Pingtung City where raw materials were processed into refined sugar over many decades. The grounds feature several buildings with exhibition spaces, restored equipment, and original structures from the production era.
The factory started in 1908 as a refinery under Japanese colonial rule and became a center of production for the region. It operated for nearly a century before production stopped in 1997.
The site shows how sugar shaped life in southern Taiwan and touched the daily work of many families in the region. Walking through, visitors see old equipment and documents that reveal what people built together over generations.
The site is easy to walk through with marked pathways connecting different areas and exhibition buildings. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be moving between multiple structures and outdoor sections throughout your visit.
Red brick pathways throughout the grounds bear the Taiwan Sugar Corporation logo and were used by workers moving between production areas. These marked routes reveal the daily flow of work and remain largely unchanged from the industrial era.
