The Bridge of Siadanshui River, Historic railway bridge in Pingtung County, Taiwan
The Siadanshui River Bridge is a historic railway viaduct in Pingtung County built with steel trusses and concrete supports spanning across the waterway. The structure combines steel and stone construction, forming a long passage that links the regions of Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
Built in 1913 during Japanese rule, the structure was constructed to move military supplies and trade goods eastward through mountainous terrain. It remained in service until 1992, making it a witness to over 70 years of regional transportation history.
The bridge links communities on both sides of the river, and people often walk across it to appreciate the view and connect with neighbors from different areas. It has become a meeting place where locals and visitors can experience the region's landscape together.
The structure sits near Jiuqutang Station with parking areas and walking paths that give access to viewing spots along the riverbank. Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the paths, and check conditions before visiting since river views change with the seasons.
Upon completion it was Taiwan's longest bridge, featuring a rare combination of German granite detailing and Japanese architectural style. This blend of international building techniques from that era makes it a notable testament to cross-cultural engineering collaboration.
