Shandao Temple, Buddhist temple in Daan District, Taipei, Taiwan
Shandao Temple is a Buddhist sanctuary in Da'an District, Taipei, blending modern construction with golden accents on the facade and roof. From the pavement, you can see the columns and wide staircase leading to the entrance, while the main hall inside opens onto shrines and offering tables.
A group of Japanese monks founded the sanctuary in 1895 when the island was under Tokyo administration. After the first building fell into disrepair, the community moved the temple to its current site and rededicated it in 1929.
As a center of Jodo Buddhism on the island, the temple draws worshippers who come to recite prayers before the altars or light incense sticks. The community organizes sessions where visitors can learn about Pure Land practice and join in meditation.
Exit at Shandao Temple station and follow signage to the Zhongxiao East Road exit, from where you can reach the building directly. Access is at ground level and suitable for all visitors who enter the space with respect.
Worshippers ring the bell in the courtyard each morning to wake the city, even though office towers and shops now muffle the sound. Some residents keep this ritual alive because it recalls times when the neighborhood was still quieter.
