Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, Film preservation center in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
The Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute is a repository for films and audiovisual works in Taipei. It stores thousands of film reels and artifacts in specialized spaces designed to protect them from decay over time.
The facility began in 1979 under a different name as a place to store and protect films, then underwent organizational changes over the decades. It gradually developed into the institute that safeguards Taiwan's film heritage today.
The institute preserves films in the Hokkien language from the 1950s, showing how cinema looked then and what stories people wanted to tell at that time. This collection reveals the daily life and voice of an entire generation.
The venue is open to visitors from Wednesday through Sunday, with later hours toward the end of the week. Allow time to explore the spaces, as there is much to see and discover throughout the building.
The institute operates its own film restoration laboratory where old reels are digitized and repaired to prevent further damage. This technical capability allows films that might otherwise disappear to survive for future generations.
