Chiayi City Cheng Huang Temple

Chiayi City Cheng Huang Temple, Chinese temple in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan

Description

Chiayi City Cheng Huang Temple is a Chinese temple featuring traditional architecture, characterized by an octagonal caisson ceiling constructed using mortise and tenon joinery without nails. The roof displays typical curved forms with decorative elements, and the interior is richly adorned with carved details and painted ornamentations.

History

The temple was founded in 1715 during the Qing Dynasty by Zhou Zhong-xuan, magistrate of Zhuluo County, and later received an honor plaque from the Guangxu Emperor in 1875. After more than two centuries, the structure underwent major renewal in 1937 to create its present form.

Culture

The temple is dedicated to the City God, an important figure in local folk belief whom visitors petition for blessings and guidance. Believers bring offerings and burn incense sticks, giving the place an active, ritual character that shapes daily worship.

Practical

The temple is open during daytime hours for visitors and offers a quiet space for exploring traditional architecture and decorations. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and either remove their shoes or walk carefully upon entering, especially when religious ceremonies are taking place.

Did you know?

The sanctuary houses a giant abacus from 1841 dating to the early Qing period, displayed in the main hall. The temple also possesses a valuable eight-lion palanquin carefully crafted from Alishan poplar wood.
