Jiujiufeng, Mountain in Taichung City, Taiwan.
Jiujiufeng is a mountain straddling the border between Taichung City and Nantou County, featuring multiple jagged peaks shaped by natural erosion of the Toukeshan Formation. The terrain includes exposed red laterite surfaces and is crossed by hiking trails that let visitors move through the different ridges and valleys.
The area was shaped by the 1999 Jiji earthquake, which triggered landslides and exposed red soil layers. This event led to the site being designated as a nature preservation area in 2000.
The name Jiujiufeng means Nine-Nine Peak, referring to how the mountain's peaks appear to line up in pairs across the ridgeline. Visitors notice this distinctive arrangement while hiking through the area.
A loop trail of approximately 2 kilometers winds through the mountain area with access points from Caotun. Wear proper hiking boots since the path is uneven and exposed red soil can be slippery.
The mountain's rock composition from the Pleistocene period has high soil permeability, which drives continuous erosion patterns that constantly reshape the peaks. This geological feature makes the landscape visibly change from year to year.
