Jiufenershan, Mountain summit in Nantou County, Taiwan
Jiufenershan is a mountain summit in Nantou County that reaches 1,174 meters in elevation. Two lakes at its base were formed through major geological shifts and now define the character of the surrounding landscape.
A major earthquake in September 1999 caused a massive landslide on the mountain that reduced its height by 400 meters. This event triggered profound geological changes across the entire area.
The mountain serves as a national memorial site, documenting the impact of natural disasters through preserved structures and educational exhibits.
The mountain can be accessed via three different hiking routes, with the main trail beginning from the Shimen Viewing Platform. Visitors should prepare for varying conditions and difficulty levels depending on the path they choose.
The earthquake created two natural lakes, Sezai Lake and Garlic Lake, which together cover approximately 180 hectares. These bodies of water remain visible testaments to the power of natural forces and continue to reshape the landscape.
