Wuchang Temple, Taoist temple in Jiji Township, Taiwan
Wuchang Temple is a Taoist temple in Jiji Township that combines a modern building with the partially destroyed remains of its original structure. The complex displays traditional Chinese architectural features such as ornate roofs, pillars, and religious decorations across both parts of the site.
The temple was built in 1923 and served as a religious center for the region for decades. A devastating earthquake in 1999 heavily damaged the original building, leading to the construction of a new temple beside it while the ruins were preserved as a reminder of that event.
Worshippers visit daily to pray and make offerings at the altars dedicated to Taoist deities. The sight of incense smoke and ritual activities shows how locals maintain their spiritual traditions in this sacred space.
The temple is located on Bazhang Street in Nantou County and welcomes visitors daily without charging admission fees. Visitors should note that religious ceremonies take place at certain times, which may affect photography opportunities and movement around the site.
The ruins of the original temple have been intentionally preserved to show how the earthquake destroyed the building, with the roof and upper structure collapsed to ground level. This unusual feature creates a stark visual contrast between the past and the present reconstruction.
