Minghu Dam, Gravity dam in Nantou County, Taiwan
Minghu Dam is a concrete structure on the Shuili River about 7 kilometers north of Shuili Township, measuring approximately 170 meters in length and 58 meters in height. It contains four pump-turbine generators that process water and generate electricity during operation.
Work on the structure began in 1980 and was completed in 1985, marking the start of Taiwan's first pumped-storage hydroelectric facility. This project opened a new chapter in the country's energy production and water management.
This structure plays an important role in managing the region's water resources and connects two major bodies of water. Visitors can see how this engineering project shapes the landscape and influences the way water flows through the area.
The site is best reached on foot when exploring the surrounding area and viewing the river and reservoir sections from different vantage points. The best time to visit is during clear weather, when water features and landscape structures are clearly visible.
At night, when electricity demand drops, water is pumped upward from the reservoir to a neighboring lake for energy storage. This system allows the facility to use excess nighttime power generation in the form of water stored uphill.
