Mingtan Dam, Gravity dam in Nantou County, Taiwan
Mingtan Dam is a concrete gravity structure in Nantou County that spans 314 meters across the Shuili River and rises 61.5 meters high. The dam wall has a massive, solid appearance designed to hold back the water behind it.
Construction began in 1987 and finished in 1995, creating an important water infrastructure project in Taiwan. This building phase was part of efforts to improve water supply and energy generation in the region.
The dam forms an integral part of Taiwan's renewable energy system, connecting with Sun Moon Lake to create a dual-reservoir hydroelectric generation network.
The dam can be viewed and photographed from different lookout points nearby, with the best views available from the northern embankment area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the area has hilly terrain.
The facility operates as a reversible system, releasing water during peak hours for power generation and pumping it back during low consumption periods. This approach allows energy to be stored and released efficiently when most needed.
