Taiyuan Asian Puppet Theatre Museum, Puppet theatre museum in Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan
The Taiyuan Asian Puppet Theatre Museum was a exhibition space in Datong District, Taipei, that displayed a large collection of hand puppets, shadow figures, string puppets, and water puppets from across Asia. The rooms were filled with objects that documented different puppet techniques and regional styles.
The museum opened in 2000 as the TTT Puppet Centre and was renamed the Lin Liu-hsin Puppet Theatre Museum in 2005 before closing in 2019. These changes reflected how the institution evolved its mission and management over two decades.
The museum displayed hand puppets and shadow figures created by artisans across Asia, each style reflecting the traditions of its region. Visitors could observe how different cultures had shaped their own puppet-making techniques over time.
The location was within walking distance of Beimen Station on the Taipei Metro, making it easy to reach by public transport. Visitors could access the space directly from the transit network without much extra walking.
Director Robin Ruizendaal published a book in 2009 featuring around 300 photographs of Asian theater puppets, creating a visual record of a vast collection. This publication became an important reference for puppet researchers worldwide.
