Old Taipei Railway Workshop, Industrial heritage site in Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The Old Taipei Railway Workshop is a historic factory in the Datong District of Taipei, Taiwan, built during the Japanese colonial period using English-style brick construction. The complex consists of large open halls with tall ventilation windows and distinct work areas that were originally laid out for the repair and maintenance of locomotives.
The workshop was founded in 1919 by the Railway Department of Taiwan's Governor-General Office during Japanese rule to service and repair locomotives. After Japanese rule ended in 1945, operations continued under Taiwanese management for several more decades before the site was eventually repurposed.
The workshop is locally known as the "Tiedao Bu" and was once a place where skilled workers spent their days repairing locomotives and teaching younger colleagues on the job. Today visitors can walk through the same work floors and get a sense of how that daily routine once looked.
The site sits in Datong District and is easy to reach by metro from central Taipei. Because the halls are large and spread across several buildings, it helps to give yourself enough time to walk through the whole complex without rushing.
In 2007 the entire building was moved about 30 meters (roughly 100 feet) to make way for construction nearby, then brought back to its original position in 2012. This relocation is considered one of the largest building-moving operations ever carried out in Taiwan.
