Former Tatsuma Chamber of Commerce, Cultural heritage monument in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
The Former Tatsuma Chamber of Commerce is an early 20th century commercial building in Taipei's Zhongzheng District. Its wooden structural elements and decorative details reflect the craftsmanship of that era, while the room layout shows how the merchant organization operated.
The building was established during Japan's colonial rule and served as a hub for trade activities between Taiwan and Japan. In 1947 it became a site of conflict during the February 28 Incident, a turning point in Taiwan's modern history.
The building reflects Taiwan's Japanese occupation period and shows how Japanese and Taiwanese merchants worked together in trade. The spaces preserve the commercial spirit of an era when such chambers directed economic activity.
The site is open from Tuesday through Sunday and can be entered via the main entrance, with guided tours available. Check opening times in advance to allow enough time for viewing the rooms and building features.
Original merchant account books and trade documents from the early 1900s are still preserved inside the building. These records reveal the actual business operations of the time and show how commercial transactions between cultures were documented and tracked.
