Jishan Gatehouse serves as the south entrance to a traditional sanheyuan compound and features carved decorations along with period roofing styles from the early 20th century. The structure displays crafted ornaments and construction methods that were common to this era and region.
The Lai family commissioned this gatehouse in 1924 to replace an older entrance at their residence called Huaidetang based on feng shui guidance. This construction project reflected how traditional geomancy principles guided their property improvements.
The name Jishan means to accumulate goodwill, reflecting traditional Chinese values important to the Lai family who came from Fujian province. You can see how these values influenced the way the structure was designed and maintained over time.
The gatehouse is located within 300 meters (1000 feet) of Sihwei Elementary School Station on the Taichung Mass Rapid Transit Green Line. You can reach it easily by public transport and visit the grounds.
The structure blends architectural elements from the Japanese colonial period with traditional Chinese design principles, showing the cultural mixing of the era. This makes it a rare example of how two building traditions coexisted in one structure.
