Xiluo Bridge, Steel arch bridge in Xiluo Township, Taiwan.
The Xiluo Bridge crosses the Zhuoshui River and links Yunlin County with Changhua County over a span exceeding 1900 meters. Its steel framework forms 31 arches spread evenly across the wide riverbed, carrying a two-lane roadway above.
Building work began in 1937 during Japanese administration and came to a halt during the Second World War. Operations resumed in 1952 with American funding and reached completion in 1953.
The design combines arched forms with steel beams that let travelers see the wide river flowing beneath the roadway. Local families visit on weekends to watch the traffic and fishermen casting nets along the banks below.
Public buses run from Douliu Railway Station directly to the bridge, and drivers find parking areas on both riverbanks. Pedestrians can walk the full length but should stay alert to steady vehicle traffic.
At its opening the structure ranked as the second longest arch bridge in the world after the Golden Gate Bridge. Its construction consumed more steel than many skyscrapers and required specialist welding techniques only available after the war.
