Tianliao Moon World, Geological formation in Tianliao District, Taiwan
Tianliao Moon World is a geological site shaped by eroded mudstone that creates a network of deep ravines and barren ridges across the terrain. The gray and brown layers of exposed rock show the different geological strata stacked over time.
The terrain formed over millions of years through mountain erosion, marine sedimentation, and tectonic uplift. Continuous weathering by water and wind carved out the deep ravines visible today.
The geological interpretation center provides educational resources about the local ecology, featuring mudstone samples and detailed photographic documentation of the region.
The best time to visit is during cooler months, since the landscape offers little shade and receives strong sun exposure. Sturdy footwear is important for safely navigating the uneven paths and slopes.
Along the road between Tianliao and Qishan are more than 20 mud volcanoes, some of which like Da Gun Shui and Xiao Gun Shui erupt periodically with mud. These natural features form when gas and liquid from deeper layers rise to the surface.
