Gangkou Temple, Chinese temple in Dongshi Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan
Gangkou Temple sits at the mouth of the Beigang River and displays traditional architecture with red brick walls and detailed decorative carvings throughout its structure. The building showcases classic Chinese craftsmanship through its ornamental design.
Lin Kai, a settler from Meizhou Island, founded the temple in 1684 under the name Tianhouxing Temple. The structure was completely rebuilt with brick in 1811, transforming it into its present form.
Each year during the seventh lunar month, the temple holds a major Ghost Festival that draws residents from six nearby villages to participate in traditional ceremonies together. These gatherings reflect the deep spiritual connections that link the community across different settlements.
The temple welcomes visitors interested in observing the architecture and religious practices. It is best to visit during ceremonial occasions when the site is fully active and you can experience the religious life most directly.
In 2005, expansion plans were halted after divination through the Mazu oracle suggested the goddess disapproved of the construction. This decision shows how traditional spiritual practices still guide how people manage the temple today.
