奇美河階群, River terrace formation in Chimi, Taiwan.
The Chimi River Terraces are a series of step-like platforms along the Xiuguluan River in eastern Taiwan, creating distinct geological formations. These terraces developed as the river naturally shaped the landscape over a very long period.
Thousands of years ago, the Xiuguluan River shifted southward and abandoned its original U-shaped meandering channel through the Coastal Mountain Range. This movement caused the formation of the visible terrace steps seen today.
Chimi village near these terraces is one of the oldest settlements of the Amis indigenous people and remains deeply important to them. The connection between the land and the people who live here shapes how the place is experienced and valued.
The terraces can be reached via the Ruigang Provincial Highway, which connects several spots in the Ruisui Township area. Wear sturdy shoes since some areas require walking across uneven ground and natural surfaces.
The natural river behavior created an S-shaped channel that left behind abandoned waterways, which transformed into the elevated terrace steps we see now. These visible traces show how water power shapes geology over time.
